Oscar is a young, playful, fun loving boy. He’s happiest when cycling, playing SkyLanders, playing with his two sisters, or generally causing mayhem. His cheeky nature and disarming smile means he frequently gets away with it.
In 2013 he was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. At the moment he continues to go from strength to strength. But, his family are all acutely conscious that this will turn a corner at some point in the future and he will begin an inevitable decline.
Muscular Dystrophy UK have been instrumental in helping his parents, Daron and Alison Devenish, to understand his condition. They say:
Through the charity we have been put in touch with people to provide support and information, and in spearheading the condition in the medical, media and political communities.”
He has the support of the amazing team at Great Ormond Street Hospital, his local medical practitioners, and of course his loving family.
The purpose of Oscar’s family fund is to give something back. “Oscar says..” means Oscar has a personal say in the way in which this is done, allowing him to ask family, friends, and the community to accept challenges that he put forward. This is to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK, and hopefully assist those with this debilitating condition.
His first challenge asks his school friends, in Old Stratford, to ‘Get Marathon Moving’. The children are challenged to log 26.2miles, between 17 July and 19 September 2015. This can be done by walking, running, scooting, swimming or cycling. They will cross the finish line on a family fun day, on 19 September, and receive their medal.
Prior to the launch of the fund, the family had already raised over £17,000, and they’re not planning on stopping there.
How you can help
Muscular Dystrophy UK has been supporting families affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy since 1959 funding research to find a treatment for this condition. With your help we can continue to fund research which could improve the lives of individuals living with this condition.
Setting up a family fund, like Oscar Says…, is a great way to fundraise for Muscular Dystrophy UK to keep our vital research moving forward. Find out more about our Family Funds.
