Information for young people: external links

Muscular Dystrophy UK is just one of many places that has information and resources that you might find useful. Here are some external links to charities, companies and organisations which provide all kinds of additional information on living with a disability.

  • Ready Steady Go A transition programme for healthcare teams which was developed by Southampton Hospital but has now been expanded across the country
  • NICE guidance on transition Formal recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) on what good transition care should look like.
  • From the pond into the sea The report from the Care Quality Comission which led to NICE reviewing transition standards and producing their new guidance.

  • NHS England Service Specification the contract which NHS England has with specialist neuroscience centres which explains what their healthcare team should look like as a best practice (Annex B on page 11 is the neuromuscular bit!).

  • Chartwell Insurance Provides specialist insurance to disabled people.
  • Disabled Motoring UK Information and advice to disabled motorists, and publishes a monthly magazine which includes car reviews by disabled drivers.
  • Fish Insurance Provides specialist insurance to disabled people
  • Forum of Mobility Centres Advice and assessment to disabled people who want to learn how to drive or access a car.
  • Motability A national scheme where disabled people who are eligible can lease a vehicle.
  • Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People Provides a range of services for disabled people, including a specialist driving school.
  • Pinpoint Provides an alert system for disabled customers who need support with refuelling at petrol stations.
  • Promove Specialist innovators of manual handling slings.

  • Employers’ Forum on Disability is the world’s leading employers’ organisation focused on disability as it affects business
  • Remploy is one of the UK’s leading providers of employment services and employment to people with disabilities and complex barriers to work.

  • APPG on young disabled people is run by our Trailblazers. The All Party Parliamentary Group provide a parliamentary platform for some of the social injustices experienced by young disabled people.
  • Disability Hate Crime Network A website dedicated to information and materials about disability hate crime.
  • Disability Law Service Provides information and advice for disabled people.
