BBC, Paralympics and Cinemas…A day in the life of Trailblazers

Trailblazers meet in Cambridge

Monday saw an exciting day for Trailblazers with the launch of our housing investigation on national radio and constructive meetings with ParalympicsGB and the disability rights charity Scope.

The day started well for us when Yorkshire Trailblazer Hannah-Lou Blackall featured on Radio 4’s You and Yours programme (28 mins) and described the obstacles she faced when looking for suitable and accessible rented properties. Hannah-Lou gave a great interview and helped raise public awareness of yet another issue that prevents young disabled people living their lives with independence. We have already set up a short survey on estate agents and will be reviewing their websites and looking in depth at the broader subject of accessible housing.

Later in the day we met with Duncan Tunbridge from ParalympicsGB and the Great Britain Boccia Federation. Duncan told us of four young men with muscular dystrophy who are currently competing in the Boccia European Championships in Norway. The athletes are all hoping to compete at London 2012 and Trailblazers and Muscular Dystrophy Campaign will be following their progress closely in the run in to the Games. If you are interested in finding out more about boccia and where you can get involved I recommend you visit GB Boccia .

Our final meeting of the day was with disability rights charity Scope where we discussed ideas and proposals to help encourage cinemas to make their venues more accessible for young disabled people.

All in all a great day’s campaigning and we should all be pleased with the great strides forward we are making as a network and as consultants, advisors and most of all campaigners.
