International Womens’ Day 2019: Women Who Inspire Me

Women’s Day is celebrated globally on 8 March every year in honour of a remarkable contribution to our society. The day also commemorates the inspiring role of women around the world to secure women’s rights and build more equitable societies.

As a young disabled woman who fights for change for all disabled people. It is a very important day for Women to be recognised for what they do to help change lives of disabled people. I look to many women for courage to carry on fighting for change.

Being disabled and having a life limiting condition is hard to come to terms with despite me having it all my life. However, I have so many courageous independent women surrounding me, which helps me to carry on and to fight for many different aspects.

I also look to other women, who I love to read about, whether in fashion, politics or a reality star.

In different ways, all women are celebrated. Women have come a long way after women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 then became a national holiday. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

Here are a few women who I either know or follow on social media.

Michelle Obama

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama is an American writer, lawyer, and university administrator who was First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. She is married to the 44th U.S. President, Barack Obama, and was the first African-American First Lady.

I love to read about Michelle Obama’s life and what she is doing to help fight for women’s rights around the world. She has also a massive impact on the LGBT community which I think is amazing.

Katie Piper

Kate Elizabeth Piper is a television presenter and former model, She was attacked with acid by her ex-boyfriend and an accomplice, causing major damage to her face and blindness in one eye. Katie has always been so positive and has even started a foundation in her name which helps people who have gone through the same thing she has. I follow her on social media and have read her autobiography. She is a true inspiration to women out there who suffer with body confidence.

Michaela Hollywood

Michaela has Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). I met Michaela through muscular dystrophy UK. Michaela is the reason that we have Trailblazers. As a group we all try to fight or inclination for disabled people, however Michaela is always fighting for us. Even if she is really poorly and writing blogs from her hospital bed. I think she is amazing and should be celebrated on International women’s day.

These are just a few amazing women who inspire me and who I am celebrating this International Womens’ Day.

Trailblazers has now moved to pan-disability charity Whizz-Kidz (September 2020).
