On Saturday 9th July, I was invited to speak at the most recent Trailblazers “Moving Up” employability event. The day was designed to give Trailblazers a chance to hear from others with similar disabilities who had carved their own paths into employment, and to improve their own interview and employability skills.
I really enjoyed the morning, sharing my story with others, and hearing how other people had found their way into the jobs they are currently doing. As someone who’s followed a fairly traditional route into employment (school, university, graduate scheme) it’s great to learn from others how they’ve found the journey and the different methods they’ve used to work in ways which best employ their strengths and passions. I still have a long way to go till I find my dream job and it’s reassuring to talk to others who are just starting out on their journeys too!
Everyone was really engaged in the day – I had to answer some difficult questions (!) but the discussions were lively and productive and I think each participant came away with a new perspective on employment – I know I certainly did.
I would really encourage anyone who’s thinking about what their own career could look like to come along to one of these events in future. The opportunity to have an open and honest discussion with other young disabled people is really valuable, and you will come away inspired and passionate to realise your own ambitions.
