Vinspired National Awards 2009

Published Date

As some you may know I attended the Vinspired National Awards at the O2 Arena on 26th November 2009 as I had been selected as the West Midlands regional winner for the Shout Award.  This award is for campaigning and defined by V as follows:

‘This award recognises a volunteer that is truly passionate about an issue and has used their voice to raise awareness and get others involved. Through creative and impactful campaigning activities they’ve created real change.’

I was really quite surprised to have been chosen, but grateful and excited to be representing Trailblazers at the first ever Vinspired Awards, which recognize and celebrate the achievements of young volunteers.

There is a range of categories of awards; these are Shout, Bridge, Eco, Energy, Fresh, Genius, Inspire, Legend, Transform, and Unite.  For each of these a regional winner is selected for each region and then three regional winners are put forward for the National award of each category.  These overall winners were to be announced on the award night.

The show was held in the Indigo2 of the O2 Arena, and this was the first time I have been.  The access was great as it is all flat and quite spacious and well laid out so I could get around easily, though I think the disabled toilet at Indigo2 could definitely be better maintained as it had a bad smell.

The night started with a drinks reception and then the food was brought out.  The way this had been arranged was that there were mini portions of each dish for each person rather than one plate of food for starter, main and dessert.  This was a disappointment for my sister and myself because as we are vegetarians it meant that we only could have one of the options.  All other dishes were unsuitable including the dessert.  The staff were apologetic and said they would bring out some fruit for us but this never happened as the chef went home!  So, this was a let down as I had made known our dietary requirements weeks in advance.

Anyway, apart from the food situation, everything was great.  After the meal the show started.  There was an intro from Terry Ryall the CEO of V, and then a video message from Gordon Brown. Next, there was a breakdancing performance from MDK BBoy crew and then presenters, James Redmond from the soap Hollyoaks and Jameela Jamil from T4, came on stage and the awards started.  A video clip of each national nominee was shown and different special guests came on stage to announce the overall winner.   Some of the guests included Gabriella Climi, Joe Thomas from The Inbetweeners, and James Caan plus many more.  I had the opportunity of meeting James Caan and told him a bit about Trailblazers. He said it was good work and ‘well done!’

Once all the awards were given out, the tables were cleared away and the After Show began which was great! There were performances from Bashy, Kiss FM DJ’s, Tinchy Stryder, Gabriella Climi, Lady Sovereign…

I had a really good time (despite being a bit hungry!) and would finally like to say a big thank you to Bobby for nominating me for this award!
