Toni and Phil Charlick’s son Adam was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in October 2009, when he was four years old. The family have set up Adam’s Fund to raise awareness and funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK.
Adam, currently receives steroid treatment for his condition and attends regular physiotherapy sessions. Adam’s mum Toni says, “We obtained information about Duchenne [muscular dystrophy] from Muscular Dystrophy UK following Adam’s diagnosis, and they were a valuable resource of information on steroid treatment as well. Of course we would love for the research that’s currently going on to find a cure but at the moment we know that’s probably a way off.
We hope though that better treatments will be found to allow Adam to live his life to the full for as long as possible, and that’s why we are committed to fundraising and supporting the work of the charity.
The family have thrown themselves into fundraising for the charity’s Duchenne Research Breakthrough Fund, which supports research into effective treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Dad Phil took part in a Four Course golf challenge in 2010 and together with his team mates raised an incredible £6,800 for the charity. The family have gone on to raise a further £5,000 through a sponsored wax of ten family and friend volunteers, and a Hollywood-themed summer ball. Their local Asda store donated a staff collection of £50 to support the fund and mum Toni completed her first ever sponsored run in December, the Christmas Pudding Dash in Sussex.
Toni completed the Great South Run in October 2016 with three friends, the 10 mile run took them around the beautiful historic docklands of Portsmouth. The three of them raised an incredible £1,821 in total.
So whats next for Adams Fund? Phil and good friend Chris are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in September 2017! You can hear more about their journey on their Virgin Money Giving Page.
