The Work and Pensipns Select Committee launched a report on 29 April on the way disability will fit a new single Equality Act. The report concluded that the perception of disability must change for the fair treatment of disabled people.
The Employers’ Forum on Disability (EFD) supported the report and also provided valuable evidence to the Select Committee. Susan Scott-Parker, who is the EFD’s Chief Executive, said the report fully supported the EFD’s views; she stated, “It is in the interests of both disabled people and employers that the law is clarified. This will help ensure organisations develop the talents of their disabled employees, as well as serve their disabled customers effectively.”
The Equality Bill is more straightforward than the confusing disability-related discrimination legislation in place, and will help both employers and employees who have disabilities.
