Nationally well-known comedians have added their names to a charity comedy show featuring Martin Hywood from Aylesbury who has muscular dystrophy, and critically acclaimed Jon Richardson, who will host a top line-up of comedians on 9 April 2020.

Money raised will go towards pioneering research that could help hundreds of children and adults in the country living with muscle-wasting conditions.

Martin Hywood was diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy in 1996, a condition which causes muscles throughout the body to weaken and waste leading to increasing disability. Martin met Jon Richardson over their shared passion for Leeds United football club

The evening of comedy will see Jon Richardson of 8 out of 10 Cats, Countdown and Ultimate Worrier fame, and friends Russell Kane, Harry Hill, Suzi Ruffell and Paul Chowdhry.

Martin has created a video for the night and will be sharing his experience of muscular dystrophy, his family fund Hywood’s Heroes and the work that we do. There will also be a raffle.  Proceeds from the event will benefit Hywood’s Heroes, a fund Martin has set up to support the work of MDUK.

Hywood’s Heroes have already raised more than £150,000 for MDUK with family friends taking part in fundraising activities ranging from walking a solitary mile, climbing Mount Snowdon and organising black tie balls, to signing up for the Virgin Money London Marathon next April.

Martin Hywood  said,

It is so generous of Jon and all the comedians who have volunteered their time for this event to help others. That is what Hywood’s Heroes is all about, doing what we can to help others, whether that’s through funding scientific research to help find a cure for not just mine, but all muscle-wasting conditions or funding equipment to help people live well with muscle-wasting conditions. We’re hoping to raise a lot of money at this event and we just couldn’t have done it without everyone who has helped along the way

 Jon Richardson, Comedian said,

Martin has faced some unfathomable difficulties in his life. Times of almost relentless challenge and negativity that I don’t fully understand how he got through. But enough about being a Leeds fan… Martin is a wonderful man and an exceptional fundraiser. I’m delighted to do my bit by asking a few friends to tit about on his behalf in aid of a fantastic charity. I can honestly say that if you are a fan of stand up comedy this will be as good a night as Aylesbury has ever seen

 Catherine Woodhead, MDUK CEO said,

Martin Hywood is a truly amazing supporter of the charity having already raised over £150,000 to help others like him with muscle-wasting conditions. This evening will be a huge event in our fundraising calendar and we really hope that everyone gets behind it to support Martin and his Hywood’s Heroes Fund”
