Campaigners outside the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff

In December 2007, Health Minister Edwina Hart AM established the Welsh Adult Neurosciences Expert Review, led by James Steers, a consultant neurosurgeon from Edinburgh, to advise her on a high quality, safe and sustainable neuroscience service for Wales, as close to home as possible. The findings were published on 30 September 2008.

Commenting on the publication of the Review and the statement made the Welsh Assembly Government, Robert Meadowcroft, Director of Policy at the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, said:

The announcement today by Health Minister Edwina Hart is extremely encouraging for the 3,000 people living with muscle disease in Wales.

The charity’s Building on the Foundations campaign has been mentioned in the statement and the Minister clearly recognises the need to urgently improve access to specialist care for families in Wales.
Included in the written statement by the Welsh Assembly Government:

The All Wales recommendations explicitly highlight the need to improve services for people with neuromuscular conditions. The provision of services for this group of patients has been raised with me on numerous occasions since I became Minister for Health and Social Services. Many of the issues facing this group of patients are set out clearly in a report entitled Building on the Foundations: The Need for a Specialist Neuromuscular Service across Wales, published in February 2008 by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. I have, therefore, decided to establish a working group under the Neuroscience Expert Group, which will have local clinical input, to develop care pathways for Long Term Neurological Conditions.
