Members of the Disabled People’s Direct Action Network hit the streets of Birmingham on 30th March to protest against the lack of accessible housing and personal assistance services for disabled people in the city.
The group chained their wheelchairs together and blockaded the entrance to Birmingham City Council’s social services department. They waved placards saying things like “I’d rather go to jail than die in a nursing home” and refused to move from their position.
Police were called, but an amicable end was found to the demonstration. A meeting between Peter Hay, director of social care and health services, and the members of DAN has been arranged for Friday 3rd April.
