The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has announced a General Election for 8 June and we’re gearing up to get candidates on board in the fight to beat muscle-wasting conditions.

In the coming days, we will be launching our Manifesto for Muscle for candidates to sign to pledge their support in the fight to beat muscle-wasting conditions.

Muscular Dystrophy UK Chief Executive, Robert Meadowcroft, says:

In the coming weeks during the general election we will work closely with our supporters to ensure crucial issues for people with muscle-wasting conditions are very much in the minds of candidates, from NHS provision and independent living to employment opportunities, support for research and faster access to emerging drug treatments.

As a charity, we work with politicians from all parties and we would not endorse a political party. But what the election offers is a chance to engage new and current MPs on the issues that are important and of great interest to our supporters. We will imminently launch our ‘Manifesto for Muscle’ to structure those conversations and we know our supporters in each part of the UK will use them when local candidates are lobbying for their vote.

We’re glad that many determined and passionate supporters often join us for meetings at Westminster and many MPs and indeed Ministers enjoy meeting them and hearing their views at first hand. We want to see more elected representatives who are ready to engage with people with muscle-wasting conditions and we will use the coming seven weeks of the election campaign to advance our cause.
