Ali Bell, 21, from Whitburn, braved the cold and bumps in the road in mid-September to do the five-mile Wee Wander Kilt Walk in Edinburgh. He did the walk in support of others who, like him, have Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

He was supported by Rachel and Andrew Montgomery, from Strathaven.

Ali lives with his mum and, until recently, his sister Stephanie, but at 25 she has flown the nest.

Rachel said: Ali won’t fly the nest and the reality of Duchenne is known to this family only too well. It’s now about living each day with fun and purpose.

MDUK Regional Development Manager – Scotland, Dean Widd, said: It has been a great delight having Team Ali take part in this year’s Edinburgh Kilt Walk, helping to raise awareness and vital funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Ali has been an inspiration to others by taking on the Kilt Walk challenge in a wheelchair, while also battling a cold and chest infection on the day! A huge well done and thank you to the team in helping to make every day count.
