Sam + Ryan - Great North Run Story

Sam Nickolay, a 26-year-old Sales Executive from Hull, will join over 55,000 others taking on the Great North Run in September. He’s one of over 175 #TeamOrange runners, supporting MDUK. It’s more than just a run for Sam; from the age of just 17, he’s been a carer for his best friend Ryan, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Sam and Ryan’s friendship blossomed at school through a shared loved of football and supporting their local football club, Hull City. After leaving school, the pair got season tickets together at the KC Stadium and often also travelled up and down the country to away games.

I have decided to support Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK) to support Ryan and all the other warriors who are living with this condition. Ryan’s mum asked me to become Ryan’s carer after we left school and by doing this throughout my time at College and University I have seen first-hand the daily struggles those living with Duchenne face. This has only made me even more motivated to challenge myself and raise as much funds and awareness as possible.”

Taking part in the Great North Run will be Sam’s first running event in over six years, the last being a 10km run in 2013. He’s been fully committed to being in the best condition for the run and has taken on a demanding training schedule. This has included a change of diet, training runs with a gradual mileage build up, cycling 30 miles on weekends as well as his usual five-a-side football on a Monday night.

It’s a little daunting to think that the GNR is now only just around the corner. I’m nervous, but excited at the same time as it’s going to be a challenge – a BIG challenge for me. Having said that, I can’t wait to be there, to share the experience with as many #TeamOrange runners as I can, to cross the finish line and to feel all the emotions that come with that. This one’s for you, Ryan! ”

As one of 175 #TeamOrange runners taking on the run for MDUK, Sam is hoping to raise a fantastic £1,000, which will take us another step closer in the race to beat muscular dystrophy. We’re all behind you Sam. Good luck!
