The next meeting of the Yorkshire Awaaz Group will be taking place on Sunday 29th April (3pm-5pm) at the Mayfield Centre, Bradford, BD5 9NP.
The theme for this meeting will be accessing and taking part in clinical trials. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation from a Research Nurse from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust on this subject and to ask questions.
In 2014, Muscular Dystrophy UK and Leeds General Infirmary developed the Yorkshire Neuromuscular Awaaz Forum as a new group for Yorkshire families affected by muscle-wasting conditions where they could meet and support each other.
The idea for Awaaz came from two mums, Nazma Chowdury from Bradford and Anisa Kothia from Dewsbury, who both have sons with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and wanted to get to know other families from South Asian backgrounds affected by muscle-wasting conditions, who were living in their area.
The aims of Awaaz are:
- To enable families affected by muscle-wasting conditions to support and advise each other
- To raise awareness of the issues affecting people and the profile of muscle-wasting conditions
- To help break down the barriers of language and culture that may prevent some families getting the best support available
- To meet as a support group on a regular basis and to encourage members to build a network that can support each other informally on an ad hoc basis.
Following the success of the Yorkshire Awaaz Group, a similar group has been launched in the West Midlands. The West Midlands Neuromuscular Sahara Group was set up following an information and support day in February which saw over 20 people come together to decide how they want these meetings to develop and what the focus of the group should be. The group are now planning their next event which will be taking place in summer.
