The Queen Square Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases is a research and clinical centre which specifically focuses on genetic and acquired neuromuscular diseases. They believe that patients with these diseases are yet to significantly benefit from major scientific discoveries and are committed to addressing this issue.

In addition to their research interests, the service at Queen Square employ a large team of specialist health professionals, including consultants, therapists and nurses, who have expertise in diagnosing and managing muscle and nerve conditions. They offer a comprehensive range of specialist clinical services and clinics, which focus on muscles and clinical core services. The centre is based in the National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square, UCLH Foundation NHS Trust. They will happily assess patients from any part of the UK. They have a dedicated, adapted, elective in-patient unit for ‘one-stop’ multi-disciplinary assessments including: Cardiology, Respiratory and Gastroenterology and a full range of therapists including clinical psychologist, physio, OT, dietician and speech and language therapists

How to access the service

To attend the clinic you must be referred by either by your GP, consultant or physiotherapist and can then access the electronic NHS Choose and Book system which gives patients a choice of place, date and time for their first outpatient appointment in a hospital or clinic.

Professor Michael Hanna

Professor Michael Hanna

Consultant Neurologist

Professor Michael Hanna is a Consultant Neurologist and Director of the MRC Centre. He runs the specialist muscle services and the Nationally Commissioned services for mitochondrial diseases and Muscle channelopathies in partnership with the muscle clinical team. He is the Director of the Institute of Neurology, University College of London.

Professor Mary Reilly is a consultant neurologist and lead for the peripheral nerve service. She is interested clinically in all forms of neuropathies but has a particular interest in inherited neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie Tooth Disease. She is currently conducting genetic lab and clinical based research and clinical trials in this area.

Dr Matt Parton

Consultant Neurologist

Dr Matt Parton provides regular specialist muscle disease clinics. His particular interests in the service include body myositis and investigation of hereditary dystrophies. He is the clinical governance lead for the neuromuscular service. He also works as a general neurologist at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Dr Chris Turner has been working as a consultant at the MRC Neuromuscular Centre and UCLH since 2007. He has a specialist interest in muscle disease and runs a twice monthly myotonic dystrophy clinic at Queen Square.

Dr Matilde Laura

Dr Matilde Laurá is a Senior Clinical Research Associate and joined the Centre in 2006. She has recently been appointed as Honorary Consultant Neurologist. She is involved in research on inherited peripheral neuropathies, clinical trials and development of outcome measures for adults and children with inherited neuropathies.

Dr Michael Lunn

Dr Michael Lunn was appointed as consultant neurologist in 2005. He has an interest in inflammatory neuropathies and his research has concerned Guillain-Barre syndrome, CIDP and paraproteinaemic neuropathies. He is also clinical lead in neuroimmunology and Coordinating Editor of the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group.

Dr Hadi Manji

Consultant Neurologist

Dr Hadi Manji is a Consultant Neurologist and Senior Lecturer. He qualified in 1982, Trinity Hall Cambridge and Middlesex Hospital, and trained in Neurology at National Hospital, Queen Square and L'Hopital Kremlin Bicetre, Paris. He was appointed Consultant in 1997. He was Chief author and editor of the Oxford Handbook of Neurology published in 2007.

Dr Rosaline Quinlivan

Clinical Lead

Dr Rosaline Quinlivan is the clinical lead for the nationally commissioned service for ‘McArdle disease and related disorders’ and leads on Transition. In 2010, she was appointed as a consultant to Great Ormond Street Hospital. She previously directed the Wolfson Centre for Neuromuscular Disease in Oswestry and led the muscle service at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Dr Amanda Wallace

Physiotherapist

Dr Amanda Wallace has worked as a physiotherapist for 15 years. Her special interests are rehabilitation in neurology and translation of research findings into clinical practice. Since 2005 she has also worked in the research environment at UCL, obtaining her PhD in 2012. Her current post is split between clinical out-patient work and research trials in exercise in neuromuscular disease.

Dr Gita Ramdharry

Academic Neuromuscular Physiotherapist

Dr Gita Ramdharry has worked as a physiotherapist since 1995 and developed a special interest in neurology early on. She worked as a clinical physiotherapist at the NHNN on 2001 and moved into research at the ION completing a PhD in 2008 looking at the biomechanics of gait in people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. She is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer and leads physiotherapy research in adults with neuromuscular diseases.

Sherryl Chatfield

McArdle Physiotherapist

Sherryl Chatfield graduated from the University of Manchester in 2001. She has specialised in neuro rehabilitation over the last 9 years, most recently completing a secondment as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in the Community Neuro Rehabilitation Service in Kensington and Chelsea. She is currently working on her research project investigating self-management and physical activity in Parkinson’s Disease for her MSc in Neurological Rehabilitation. Having previously worked at NHNN, Sherryl joined the CNMD in October 2013, to focus on McArdle Disease.
