Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The Sheffield Neuromuscular service is a Muscular Dystrophy UK Centre of Excellence and provides care and support to adults affected by muscle and nerve conditions. This service is available to people living in South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Lincolnshire. The service also sees patients from further afield who require access to specialist treatments or further opinions.

The neuromuscular disease multidisciplinary service includes access to neurology, neurophysiology, muscle and nerve biopsy, neuropathology, cardiology, respiratory care, genetics, physiotherapy, neuromuscular care advisor, speech & language therapy, occupational therapy, orthotics and wheelchairs & seating.

How to access the service

The service accepts referrals to the Neurologists via GP or other hospital Doctor.

Patients from South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire can self-refer for specialist physiotherapy..

Dr McDermott is a a Reader in Neurology and a Consultant Neurologist, with a special interest in MND and neuromuscular disorders, and a Co-Director of the Sheffield MND Care and Research Centre. He is leading research projects on improving symptomatic management for patients with neuromuscular disease.

Neuromuscular Care Advisor

Margaret provides Neuromuscular care advice for both children and adults. Margaret qualified as an occupational therapist in 1984 and has worked in social services, acute orthopaedics, community neurorehabilitation, Motability and NHS strategic service coordination. Professor of Neurology and Care Centre Director

Professor Pamela Shaw is a clinician scientist in Neurology. Since 1991 she has led a multidisciplinary programme of research investigating genetic, molecular and neurochemical factors underlying neurodegenerative disorders of the human motor system and evaluating potential neuroprotective agents and improvements in symptomatic management in the clinic.
