Accessible Holidays: Live Q&A on Tues 7 February

With the cold weather around us, many of you may be planning of escaping on a holiday or dreaming of your holiday later in the year.

Muscular Dystrophy UK will be hosting a live discussion on our main Facebook page about accessible holidays. We will be joined by Martyn Sibley, CEO and co-founder of Disability Horizons, who will be available to answer your questions. Martyn is a specialist in accessible travel and was named the third most influential disabled person in the Power 100 list 2017.

Please join us on 7 February from 6-7pm where you can ask questions about planning your own summer holiday or share your experience of accessible travel and hear more about Martyn’s own adventures. If you are interested in the discussion please email your details to info@musculardystrophyuk.org and we will send you a reminder before the Q&A goes live.

    Hi embayweather

There was some discussion about cruises. I don’t know about all cruise lines but the one I went on issue the following statement on website:

“We provide complimentary wheelchairs for getting on and off the ship. If you would like to have a wheelchair or scooter during the cruise, you are welcome to bring your own or hire one from a company that provides wheelchairs and scooter to hire for cruises.”

I imagine that’s a standard approach. I was required to have a manual chair with me in case of emergency as well as my power chair.

Many thanks for that. At least it indicates that it is not totally out of the question.

scooters can go no bother particularly small ones but.. I would check that your cabin is big enough to get it in and that the lift is big enough on your floor. I was talking to someone few weeks ago that had to leave the hire scooter in the corridor as it couldn’t make the turn into room.. Risking leaving your own scooter would be an issue. And a a trek to get to a lift that was good size for scooter which meant aging hubby had extra walking.

Thanks for that thought. It is a long way off yet, if at all, but I will keep these in mind when we book.
