Standyuppy, Two-Wheely, Electric, Scootery Thing ??….

3 AM this morning gave up trying to sleep, but plenty of sport on the TV all round
the world. Ended up at the cricket in Australia where it was so hot they need regular drinks
    breaks.

On the field trundled men with these wonderful gadgets carrying the drinks. Sort of electric scooters,
but single person upright versions. Difficult to describe but such a good single person easy transport
idea. Very stable, very nippy, two wheels, very compact, a column rising up with a few controls
    on, Electric motor obviously.

Why have I not seen these before ? They seem to answer every problem people have with the bulky
four wheel scooters. It would solve all the storage problems cat was helping me with. perfect for
nipping in a shop, or on a bus. Obviously a few more velcro strips for MD people and I will
pay ten pounds extra to have a little perching seat. They would obviously be much cheaper than
the 4 wheelies as they are smaller, lighted, less materials, smaller motor. Why are these not in
every disability shop. What on earth are they called?

Are they a variation of the segway?

    That’s the kind of thing.

(thought segway was musci stuff ?)

These were a bit bigger with a more stable base that meant it
    didn’t need the third wheel.

But either would do. Where do we get them, why hasn’t
everyone got one. surely they are the answer indoors to
    so many people’s problems.

Google says they have there own website, and that they do the equivalent of 450 miles per gallon.

They are even on Youtube :-

The camera people at the cricket in Oz have been using them too.

Mind you, they can have their problems… ;)

    Might have known…..

Spent ages on the Segway site, no mention of a price.

Finally after a lot of searching :-

The Very cheapest one is £ 5195

How can it be that expensive ? It cannot be that expensive.

There just is not that much to it that it can cost anywhere near that much even
with the “rip of a crip factor”.

It’s expensive because of the way it balances on two wheels I expect. Interestingly I remember it being marketed as a mobility aid at the roadshow a long time ago. Now it tends to be used as a rich person’s toy or for security on private land. Not legal on the public road.

Too rich for the likes of me sadly.

As you say it must be full of gizmos, gyros, gadgets and all sorts of expensive stuff.

apparently people race them, go on skateboard tracks, just play with them in fact.

All I want is a slow speed one to visit the Post Office and corner Shop.

Segway type things were banned in the UK because of the speed and safety element. You can use them on private land and the gyro mechanism is the same as the ibot chair. In fact gyro based wheelchairs are made so the seat suspends in the middle of the wheels as one one as the Consumer and Electronic Show this year I think. Trouble is – they are wider than the ‘wide’ accessible doors so unless places had double doors then you’d still be stuck.

Personally think gyro mechanisms will be the future for us – but maybe in 10-15 yrs and not on the NHS (if that still exists).

You can hire them at stately homes I think and the grounds keeps at Leeds castle zoom along on them at like 40 mph!! It’s scary.

And let us not forget how the inventor of the segway died (his set went off a cliff). Most people can’t even control a scooter never mind one of these lol.
