    Tendon Lengthening & Keloid

Hi all. I have muscular dystrophy, I’m 34 – they have clinically diagnosed me with Bethlem myopathy although the label tends to change every 5 years or so depending on the consultant :D I have been advised to have tendon lengthening surgery; however I’m not sure whether to proceed. I had an open tendon lengthening in 1994 and it basically caused me major issues for about 18 months, the scar went keloid and I needed steroid injections, I couldn’t put weight on it, it was terribly painful and the nerves were severed down the side of my foot. The consultant has said that they would do the procedure differently using a triple cut approach – essentially three smaller cuts and that I should be back to ‘normal’ within a couple of weeks. I have asked about post-operative pain and was told “some discomfort” (standard line!), and asked about preventing keloid but have not been given anything specific just reassured. I’m wondering if anyone has had surgery of this nature and has a similar condition to me – how did it impact on you and your healing? Any health professionals that can give me concrete advice regarding keloid? Is the risk of rupturing something that I should be taking? Also, the gait analysis that formed the basis of the consultant’s recommendation had a control group of 26 ‘normal’ children – should I be questioning this? Any advice greatly appreciated.
