    Ventilator digging into nose

    Hi,

I work with someone who’s recently started to use a ventilator overnight. Sorry I don’t know the lingo so I’ll try to add as much info as possible.
It’s a ResMed, Lumis 100 and comes with Mirage Micro Nasal CPAP Mask with Headgear (large wide).
Although her mum adjusts it until she’s comfortable on an evening she wakes up in pain as it’s digging underneath her nose/upper lip.

    Any advice?

Masks are very difficult to get right. In my case, something that works 99% of the time might cause pain and discomfort if my system is a bit run down.

I don’t think I’ve used the mask that you mention but some things that have helped me over the years…

    Sudacrem
Sticky backed towelling (the sort that you put around tennis rackets.
    Cotton wool
A special tape that I can’t remember the name of.

I have had the issue you describe and I find it’s normally caused by the headgear straps being too low either side of my face. It is very frustrating and most of us NIV users have gone through this at some point.

I have struggled with the newer type of headgear for nasal masks. I wear the nasal pillow now and that works brilliantly for me.

“Special Tape” sarah mentions is called Duoderm extra thin. it comes in large sheet and you cut to size. it acts like an extra skin and reduced mask to skin friction Will add the part number when I can as it comes in lots of variations. its termed as a healing tape as well. I also use it on Acne It is supplied by my Respiratory department.

Getting a right fit mask is just like shoes.
