When traditional fundraising methods closed to long-time Muscular Dystrophy UK (MDUK) supporter Brian Hopkins, and knowing funding was desperately needed, he devised a Covid-19 safe plan and signed up to take an MDUK Big60 Challenge.

His fantastic commitment to the charity started following the diagnosis of his nephew with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Sadly, the boy died, 23 years ago, aged 17.

For 25 years, the Managing Director of a Birmingham based engineering company has chaired the MDUK Knowle and Dorridge branch, going out to help run quizzes, community barbecues and door-to-door street collections, raising over £380,000.

But in late October, Brian stayed at home, kept his distance and swam 600 lengths of his 10-yard long swimming pool.

He said:

MDUK has been supporting people suffering from 60 different strains of muscle-wasting conditions for over 60 years so I was keen to react to their call for regular supporters to come up with a ’60-themed’ idea.

60 lengths did not seem much so I opted to do 600.

Gurdev Singh, MDUK Regional Development Manager, Midlands and Anglia, said:

The truly fantastic commitment of long-terms supporters like Brian has helped to save our charity this year. We are truly grateful.
