    Bugger.

Just watched a cheery plumber walk off with my iPad money.

Oh well, maybe in six or nine months time.

    All in cash too.

I am trusting him to pay the correct tax on that (there is your 38 billion deficit Georgie it
    wasn’t the Crips after all).

I am sure they will get on fine, they are cousins after all.

I remember AMG was musing about buying a Kindle.

Kindle has a six inch screen. If she downloads the Kindle app from the App Store
she has a free 10 inch Kindle as well.

    Re: The Ipad Decision….

I was staunch anti-apple purely cos every man & his dog has apple something & I can’t stand apple fan boys. Then last christmas my parents neighbours son showed me his ipad2. It’s first time I used one hands on. I spoke to Vodafone about it in January & they gave me both an ipad2 & iphone. Used in synch can be quite handy for a few apps but, I’ve rapidly got fed up with the iphone though, not for me. It’s quite a dated op system, the apps are expensive compared to android & the screen on the iphone is smaller than most android phones with a poor battery in comparison to some.

The ipad though is quite nice. I wouldn’t of bought the newer version as there is no significant distinction between them technologically (my screen is plenty impressive) & it weighs a little more. I should’ve maybe stuck to the android system & bought a tablet with that to go with the Galaxy SIII I now have. The android is a breeze to use, very intuitive & many apps are either free (albeit with some advertising) or are cheaper than apple. What is really annoying, with apple games in particular, they list a game as free, you play it for a while & then hit a brick wall where you can’t progress any further without making in game purchases. That stincks ! IF you was fool enough to play-purchase-play-purchase in this way you can spend tens of pounds on a game or more. If I want to buy a game, I’ll buy it, at a set price, not ongoing. I don’t want something to call itself free & then sting you after continually.

So, I held onto the iphone till now, just received the SIII a couple weeks ago & will now sell the iphone & pay off the contract. Mostly use the ipad in the bedroom as I don’t have a pc or tele in there & will continue to do so until another sparkly thing catches my eye

Excellent points by Woogy (welcome back again).

Apple devices are very overpriced and they use their position to keep them artificially high.

Android are catching up fast and hopefully the new range of tablets anounced recently will
force Apple to reduce their prices. These include the Google Nexus, the Microsoft Surface,
the Kindle Fire and Samsung Galaxy.

Sadly I will probably be forced to go for the iPad. With my gammy hands and their incredible
capacitive touchscreen will be essential. Also I had a session in the Apple Store where they
ran through the amazing strategy Apple have of interrelated software and ease of access
across all their devices and platforms. I really feel they are at the cutting edge with iCloud, gesture
and inertia driven input, wireless synchronisation, speech recognition and airplay. Also they have an App where I
can watch my Sky TV in bed on the iPad and AMG found us an App which turns the thing
into a Freeview TV (Catch Up TV).

If only things were not so damned expensive.

    Re: The Ipad Decision….

Apple & Samsung are continually in the courts challenging patents on each others hardware, at this moment in time Apple have temporarily ceased the sale of the new Nexus tablet in the states. The irony is, they both supply one another or maybe it is just Samsung to Apple but, there are components supplied to the opponent in order to make the devices they argue over. More money than sense it seems to me.

Catch up tv is an app I’ve got, as well as 4OD, ITV player, 5 On Demand, Iplayer & Sky Go (which has just updated to offer some whole series box sets from the sky atlantic, sky one channels etc). Another I’d suggest, assuming you’ve got a normal pc somewhere else in the house, if you’ve got films or media files you wish to access from that whilst in your bedroom with your ipad you can use something called ‘Air Video Server’. It does mean unfortunately you have to leave your pc on but, it means you can stream from pc to ipad & not have to clog up ya shiny beast with huge files if you’ve only got the 16gb jobby.

“Air Video Server” sounds amazing and could be a vital part of the decision if that
    is what it does.

Might not have to pay out to get the 64 GB monster afterall. Thanks.

There is a paid version of Air Video Server, it’s only £1.99. Not sure what it does extra. I think it allows you to choose an order or arrange a play list that you can’t do in the free version. I should really pay for it. I’ve used it when I download all the original Danish series of ‘The Killing’, I didn’t want to watch the American version on channel 4 & had missed it first time round on BBC Four. I streamed it to the tele in my living room via the PS3 but, the files when filled onto the 42″ screen were quite grainy, on the ipad2 they looked great. The other thing Air Video Server does is convert file formats as it streams – big, BIG time & space saver. You download a small programme onto your pc to make it the server & then the app onto your iphone or ipad & you’re away. The files have to be in you windows media library though.

I’ve got the 64gb version & it literally only has apps & photos on it because I can stream this way. It’s a bit of overkill really & a waste. I wish I could demo it for you so you could see for yourself the convenience. I hope you don’t encounter problems with file conversion or streaming if you take my advice. If you got the iphone Taungfox, please try the air video server on that first before you change your thinking on the size of the ipad you’re gonna get, I really don’t want you to get something you’ll be unhappy with later based on anything I say.

Theses are excellent points and help to solve a massive problem on the Ipad / ipod touch family, that of the
incredibly small amount of space for storage. As with you on my 32Gb Touch it is vitually all Apps, Photos, Gizmos
and stuff and little space for music and content it was invented for. They are becoming App platforms and the only
way to go will be to steam things. Thanks.

No worries. I tried the Samsung equivalent of Siri on my Galaxy SIII too, assuming it would be on the Galaxy tab. Maybe it’s my merged common London/Bucks accent that it struggled with but, it didn’t cope very well at all except for swear words… you have the option to toggle offensive words on or off, naturally with my potty mouth & some less than flattering contacts with nicknames in my phone book I opted to have rude words allowed.

So, when in frustration after trying to dictate a text & it created an indecipherable sentence I naturally reverted to type & called it a “f….. useless pice of s…” it replied ringing “f…..” :D.

Samsung voice equivalent of Siri is now off ;)

    Re: The Ipad Decision….

    Fantastic News………

It seems there will be a new iPad, a cheaper, lighter, thinner “‘iPad Mini”.

The rumour mill has been going ballistic over the last few weeks, but now the weight of sightings
and insider comments do seem to indicate Apple are finally going to release a smaller version of
    the iPad.

This is because of the success of the seven inch Nexus and Amazon Fire touchscreen tablets. To keep their
market position it seems Apple have to cpmpete at this level.

This is what so many of us have been waiting for. The iPad although a magical device is just that bit to big and heavy to be trully portable and is of course wildy overprriced. The new screen it seems will be 7.85 inches giving 66 % of the area
of the full iPad. I agree that the tipping point is that so many people have found that watching Films
and TV is completely acceptable on the new rash of Seven inch screens.

Now I will be able to watch SKY TV in bed on the “SKY GO” App and AMG found us the “TV Catch Up” app that
turns your tablet into a Freeview TV. Price indications $ 299 (182), due Ocotber / Nov.

Woogy is spot on as usual. My decision of the week has been which tablet computer to order.

Decision made and it arrived on Wednesday. The delay had been just as you say waiting for this
fabled “Mini iPad” to arrive. Actually it is still not announced and the one thing we know about apple is it will
be more expensive than you want to pay. The last straw is that it will require an expensive connector
to use all the Apple gadgets I have already bought.

Therefore went to have demo of Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7, the two names I trust.

After two minutes decision made. Quantum Leap has arrived. Both these tablets now have
touchscreens that are the complete equal of the iPad / iPod. The other deal breaker is that
now Android have all the Apps I am used to, and even a few new ones.

It is just perfect for my gammy hands and fingers, the ten point multi touch capacitive screen
is unbelievable responsive to touch and whole range of gesture and speech driven commands. Yes
the new Andoid 4.1 on the Nexus 7 even has their version of SIRI. Just ask it what the weather
is, how old the Queen is or to define a rude word and a natural sounding voice tells you.

Went for the Google Nexus 7, because Kindle only give you a “Walled Garden” of the Andoid Apps.
