Accessible Housing- London Trailblazers meet with Property Developers

Published Date

On July 5th 2010 London Trailblazers met with the Managing Director and the Regeneration Director of St George Homes, Beaufort Park, to discuss proposals for improving access within the apartments, together with building on the already successful implementation of the Lifetime Homes scheme. I was gladly joined by Trailblazers Sulaiman Khan, Rikin Shah and Oldooz Koochekpoorian who took time out of their day to join me for the meeting.

Some of the London Trailblazers had previously highlighted concerns surrounding the lack of accessible housing in their regional meeting back in March, and so to get the opportunity to work together with a housing company was a great way of reinforcing our aims to improve access to housing, and strengthen our campaign.

Managing Director Tony Carey, took time out from his day to consider our proposals. He and Regeneration Director Charmaine Young then took us on a tour around the development, whilst listening to our own experiences and taking on board our suggestions to improve access within and around the Beaufort Park Estate.

The development offers bespoke adaptations to new builds for purchasers, but is proudly compliant with the Lifetime Homes scheme whereby 70% of all their apartments offer a minimum level of accessibility, including widened doorways, lowered light switches and raised plugs. Mr Carey wishes to surpass the minimum standards and offer improved access in all apartments.

We hope to continue working closely with the Beaufort Park estate and will be setting up subsequent meetings with local authorities and organisations with similar aims. I hope we can create a more easily accessible property ladder within London, and would love to hear if anyone else has had any challenges in finding accessible accommodation to rent/buy or whether they may be interested in a national campaign?!
