West Midlands Neuromuscular Centre

Published Date

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you all know, especially those you living in the West Midlands, about a new fundraising appeal, which was recently launched by The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign in order to raise funds for the new West Midlands Neuromuscular Centre, which is to be established at Lakeside, Kings Norton, Birmingham.

The site has been given to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign for use as a Neuromuscular Centre by the Patrick Family who are co founders of the MDC and the Joseph Patrick Trust. This is an enormous gesture by the Patrick family who have already commissioned an architect to draw up plans to make the building suitable for its new purpose.

The centre’s new fund raising group are looking for help in raising funds in the West Midlands to refurbish and equip the new centre. We aim to create a Neuromuscular centre of excellence in the heart of the West Midlands. Working with clinicians and professionals in the region the new centre will offer a full range of treatments including Specialized Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, and on site Hydrotherapy Pool. There will be a wide range of complimentary services available including acupuncture, reflexology, and deep tissue massage amongst others, which will enhance and maintain the benefits achieved by receiving ongoing treatment and care. Centre users will be able to access support and information on a wide range of subjects including benefits, equipment, wheelchairs, also advice on the practicalities of house adaptations, and suitable transport.  The centre will cover all of the West Midlands however clients are expected to travel from much further a field to access the facilities that will be on offer. The new centre will also have a Print and Design Centre with opportunities to learn and to take accredited courses in basic computer skills, graphic design, and web design in collaboration with a local college.

We are inviting local schools, clubs, organisations and businesses to become involved with the appeal and be part of this new and exciting project to bring these much needed specialised services for people with MD.

The cost to convert the building and to buy essential equipment will be expensive, however I’m sure that with the support of the local community, prospective users of the centre and supporters of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign we will meet our ambitious target of £250,000.

Our planned opening date is April 2012, again a little ambitious you may think but given the urgent need for improved access to life changing physiotherapy and hydrotherapy we think it’s achievable.

The group has already completed many fundraising events, including organising and taking part in Quiz nights, Tea parties, Half marathon’s, Shark dives and much more. If you would like to help with our fund raising events, or organize your own event please do contact us we will be very pleased to hear from you and will help in any way we can.
