Cambridge grandmother won’t let Coronavirus stop her running for Muscular Dystrophy UK

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Concetta De Martino’s work at Castle School for children with special needs in Cambridge is on hold and for now she can’t take her two grandsons out and about – but nothing will stop this indomitable grandmother training towards the London Marathon rescheduled for Sunday 4 October or The Great North Run on Sunday 13 September.

I recently completed the Cambridge Half Marathon in my commitment to raise money for Team Orange. So far this year it’s one race down, two to go.

Both Leo, 11 and Quinn, 7 have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Concetta has organised many fun activities for them in previous years including renting an adapted canal boat, experiencing a jet pack session, indoor surfing, making pizzas, and making cakes and muffins. Last year the brothers fired the gun to start the Newton Cambridge Town and Gown 10k on Sunday 20 October and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Leo is a full time wheelchair user now and Quinn struggles more on his feet and uses a buggy when he gets too tired.

Last year I proudly took on the gruelling 26.2 mile London Marathon to fundraise for Muscular Dystrophy UK. It was an incredible experience and I am really looking forward to running again.

I am very supportive of the charity which has helped my family in many ways and the Coronavirus will not stop me training towards this year’s events.

I am always fundraising. I have organised quiz nights, a mixed netball tournament, various cake stalls and raffles and I have cycled from Lands’ End to John O’Groats.

Challenge Events Officer at Muscular Dystrophy UK, Kiera Santry said:

We’re absolutely delighted to have Concetta running with #TeamOrange again for both the Great North Run and the London Marathon.

We feel very proud of this courageous woman who continues to rise to the challenge for Muscular Dystrophy UK, to help us improve the lives of thousands of families living with muscle-wasting conditions. Nothing stops her!

You can support Concetta with her fundraising efforts for both of these events by heading to her JustGiving page.
