A fundraiser with Becker muscular dystrophy has spent the month ziplining, canoeing and biking to raise money to help children with muscle-wasting conditions.

Rich Copson, 33, has taken on a series of extreme sport challenges in the Lake District with the help of the Calvert Trust, which specialises in arranging adventure holidays for disabled people.

Rich, who fundraises on social media under the name @themdfighter, said: “With conditions like mine, you perhaps don’t have a chance to do things that are a bit risky or dangerous. You can’t go to the gym and work out because your body isn’t like everyone else’s and you’ll probably do more harm than good.

It was great to go somewhere where nothing seemed unachieveable. It gave me the confidence to do things I haven’t done for a very long time.

It gave me a great sense of achievement. The event was a great way to focus on what you can do physically, rather than what you can’t. You might not be able to do the activities the conventional way, but the important thing is that you can do them.

Rich, who was diagnosed at 16 and uses crutches to walk, has also taken part in Move a Mile for Muscles, and volunteers at the Muscular Dystrophy UK Leicester Town and Gown 10k.

He said: “The fundraising I do now is not really for me. I’ve got Becker and I expect to live with it, but I want to help families with children who have more life-limiting muscle-wasting conditions. They are facing potentially the early loss of a child and they need that support. They are a massive inspiration.”
