Round 4 Powerchair Football National Leagues Preview 2017/18

The Muscular Dystrophy UK Premiership and Championship completed their first three rounds back in November 2017. This season so far has been entertaining for spectators but pretty nerve wracking for coaches, with both leagues being extremely tight going into the winter break. In this blog post our player/pundit Kai Gill analyses the top performers so far and the teams to watch out for in the second half of the season.

The Muscular Dystrophy UK Premiership ended the first half with West Bromwich Albion in pole position with 34 points. The West Midlands side have played 13 matches, 11 of those have been victories, one draw and one defeat. Brighton and Hove Albion PFC and Aspire PFC aren’t far behind, with just three points separating the top three. It goes without saying that it’s going to be a nail biting finish for who will be crowned champions of the Premiership over the remaining three weekends.

In the Muscular Dystrophy UK Championship, Leeds PFC are still sitting top of the table with 37 points and remaining unbeaten so far. Second place Sevenoaks PFC are only two points behind the leaders. Whilst the competition at the top is nailbiting, you still can’t take your eye off the competition for the all-important play-off spot. The remaining three rounds, could be very interesting with both Muscle Warriors and the East Riding Electric Eels not far behind Cheltenham SW All Stars, who are sitting in third.

For my team, the Electric Eels, the Christmas break has certainly been needed but we’ve been training harder than before with Electric Eels head coach, Lee Brennan, putting the squad through a mini preseason. It’s been tough so far but enjoyable. As a captain, it’s been pleasing to see the players working hard as a team to get into the play-off spot. We know it won’t be easy but, we are ready to fight for it.

The team have been playing in the WFA cup over the winter period. We managed to beat  Greenbank PFC and won 5 – 0 in the first round but unfortunately lost to West Bromwich Albion in the second round.

Meanwhile, the club have recently celebrated our fifth-year anniversary, so I’ve been very busy planning marketing campaigns, alongside media duties and fundraising campaigns.

There is only a couple of months to go before the renowned squeaks of wheels, and battery chargers return to the Lee Westwood Sports Centre. I’m sure I speak for all of the players who play in the leagues when I say: ‘We can’t wait!’ This first half of the season has already been exciting, so who knows what the second half will bring.
