Our Allied Health Professionals Hybrid Conference 2024

31 October 2024

In October we welcomed over 125 Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) to our hybrid upskilling conference.

The day focused on sharing the latest advances and best practice in neuromuscular care, bringing together physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists amongst others. It emphasised the importance of multidisciplinary teams and provided an opportunity for attendees to expand their network and learn from colleagues across the neuromuscular field.

The first part of the morning explored best practice in physiotherapy management and how to identify and manage respiratory failure. Multidisciplinary teams play an important role in caring for people with muscle wasting and weakening conditions – from the assisted mechanical ventilation to nutrition teams.

The following sessions focused on postural management and funding for specialist wheelchairs and the role of speech and language therapy in neuromuscular care. Issues were raised around the scale of demand for wheelchair services and underfunding, allowing attendees to discuss the challenges their services experience in delivering the best possible neuromuscular care, and to share the best practice and resources they use.

“It was a really good chance to hear from different professions… and to see the bigger picture, meet people from different parts of the country and share experience and best practice”

Caroline Smith
Highly Specialised Paediatric Physiotherapist -Neuromuscular, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS FT

After lunch speakers presented a case study on the impact wellbeing practitioners have in supporting people living with muscle wasting and weakening conditions and their families, along with a condition-specific update on Myasthenia Gravis.

The final session shared best practice when working with neuromuscular patients as a multidisciplinary team and engaging with local hospitals and emergency teams. The day ended with a networking reception for those who joined us in-person in Birmingham.

“A great variety of topics with speakers from a variety of settings. Some good ‘real world’ topics and discussions.”

Emma Kimpton
Trainee Advance Nurse Practitioner, Sheffield Children’s NHS FT

We’re very grateful to all our speakers for their time and expertise. Thanks to all who helped shape and deliver this year’s conference and of course all our attendees.
