Together we are stronger – that’s why we through our Joseph Patrick Trust (JPT) grant are collaborating with SMA UK on their latest grant programme SMArt Moves.
Lifechanging grants making a difference

Our welfare fund JPT provides grants towards the costs of essential powered mobility equipment for children and adults with muscular dystrophy or a related neuromuscular condition.
SMA UK supports people living with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) has been awarded a grant from The Motability Foundation. This will help give those living with the condition, the opportunity to receive part-funding for mobility equipment and wheelchairs.
We’re delighted to be jointly funding essential equipment and wheelchairs – these life changing grants are helping to make a difference.
Sam’s story
Sam, 38, was diagnosed with SMA type 3 and lost the ability to walk when he was around five years old. Now, he is a full-time wheelchair user, who needs 24 hour living care. Sam completed the application and received a £2,500 grant.
Sam, who is currently waiting to receive his new wheelchair, said: “Since the recessions and the cuts to public services I’ve seen a massive downturn in what the NHS can provide. The average wheelchair which they do provide now is far from suitable. It doesn’t allow people like me to live an active and inclusive life in any way.
“It’s important that people know there are grants like this available. It’s the difference between them getting the equipment they need or just not getting it. Especially now, with the cost-of-living crisis, people just don’t have any spare money or means to get the equipment that would make the world of difference.”
Providing grants to make a difference
Our Deputy Director of Care, Campaigns and Support, Neeru Naik said: “These grants are a lifeline for so many people in the muscle wasting and weakening community. We are here to provide guidance and support, so please do reach out to us.”
Ally Allen, Community Grants Officer at SMA UK said: “We know how expensive specialist pieces of equipment are and our SMArt Moves initiative will allow people to get access to provision a lot quicker. The grant will have an enormous positive impact, as we aim to help improve the quality of life and independence of all those living with SMA through enhanced mobility.”
