Innovation and partnership are behind everything we do to ensure research is given every chance to succeed, and we’re proud to have played a key role in The European Neuromuscular Centre’s (ENMC) since it first began in 1992. We’ve now supported the centre in their mission for over 30 years.

The European Neuromuscular Centre (ENMC)
The ENMC, bringing together clinicians and researchers
The ENMC was set up by a group of European patient organisations with the aim of bringing together clinicians and researchers from across the world. To achieve this, it organises and funds a variety of workshops.
Workshop topics vary from preclinical studies (laboratory-based studies involving cellular or animal models), clinical trial readiness (making sure everything is in place to test a new drug is safe to use and works well) and outcome measures (a set of measurements in clinical trials that tell clinicians if a test drug works) for the diagnosis and care of neuromuscular conditions.
The community at the centre of ENMC’s mission
Part of ENMC’s mission is to keep the muscle wasting and weakening community informed about the outcomes and progress made at these workshops in relation to research or the setting of new guidelines, such as standards of care.
People living with muscle wasting and weakening conditions are at the centre of the ENMC’s mission as it looks to bring together researchers and clinicians from across the world to collaborate together in:
- Clinical trials
- Research validating the diagnostic markers for specific muscle wasting and weakening conditions
- Setting treatment guidelines
- Scientific publications
- Uncovering how diseases start developing
- Bringing basic research into treatment development
- Training researchers in their early and mid-career
Since it was established the ENMC has reached some important milestones. It has:
- Hosted more than 270 workshops.
- Had the results from more than 90% of ENMC workshops published in the scientific journal Neuromuscular Disorders.
- Established an active network of over 4,500 researchers, clinicians and patients.
- Continually created international collaboration in trials with participants from more than 75 countries.
Our role within the ENMC
Our Director of Research and Innovation, Dr Kate Adcock, is on the Executive Committee of the ENMC, which consists of representatives from the partner organisations. The Executive Committee works closely with the ENMC’s Research Committee and meets twice a year, when the partners decide on the new workshops from submitted applications, as well as making important strategic decisions for future ENMC activities.
