On Sunday 11 May, Abby Brammer is taking part in the Bidwells Oxford 10k, inspired by her grandad who lives with muscular dystrophy. Hoping to raise money as well as increasing awareness of muscle wasting conditions, Abby will be joined by thousands of others who have already signed up to take part. She tells us what motivated her to take on her first 10k run.
Running my first 10k in support of my grandad

My partner does a lot of running but I only really got into it a few months ago. The initial aim was to get fitter but when I heard about the Bidwells Oxford 10k, I knew I had to sign up.
My grandad was diagnosed with a muscle wasting condition in his early childhood and told that he’d be in a wheelchair by the age of 24. Now he’s in his 60s and while he does use a wheelchair, he still has some mobility and remains positive despite the daily challenges he faces.
“Grandad lived next door to us when I was growing up and has been a real father figure throughout my life. I have lots of funny, happy memories from over the years but one little thing that always makes me smile is remembering going round to his house for supper as a kid.”
He used to give us chocolate muffins and chocolate custard just before bed. You can imagine how bedtime went after all that sugar. He still does it when I see him now!
He’s such a lovely man, always there for others. So, I want to do this for him.
His condition mainly affects his arms and legs, and he struggles to go out now, but still tries to walk as much as possible.
“He’s really proud that I’m doing this and fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy UK. I hope that I can help make a difference for him as well as everyone else living with a muscle wasting condition.”
My training slowed down a bit over Christmas but I’m getting there now. I go to Oxford a lot as my sister-in-law lives there, so I’m looking forward to running around the city on the day and raising some money for a good cause.
