Members of our Lay Research Panel (LRP) represent the views of people affected directly or indirectly by a neuromuscular disorder when making decisions about what research MDUK funds. As a member of the Panel, you will help us to evaluate applications for funding by reading plain English summaries of fundraising applications and discussing these with the rest of the Panel.
Why volunteer? This is a great opportunity to shape the future of the research that MDUK funds, make sure the voices of those affected by muscle-wasting conditions are considered, and learn more about current research into muscle-wasting conditions. You'll also meet new people and gain experience working as part of a friendly and motivated team.
As a member of the Lay Research Panel, you will be:
- Reading and assessing plain language applications for funding (prepared by researchers).
- Attending meetings of the Lay Panel to discuss your views on applications, and contributing towards recommendations for future funding.
- Assist the MDUK Research team in determining the best ways of communicating research to a lay audience.
Time commitment: The Panel typically meet once or twice a year; meetings can be attended via Zoom or in person in our London office. Meetings usually take a half day and you will be required to read applications prior to meeting.
Your skills and experience: You don't need any scientific background to be a member of the Panel. We are looking for individuals who are affected by muscle-wasting conditions (either directly or indirectly) who are interested in medical research and willing to spend time reading through and assessing applications for research funding.
