On the Sofa interview with Shelley Wait

The incredibly positive attitude of Shelley Wait, who lives with FSHD muscular dystrophy, has inspired daughter Laura to make her one of her top stars in her new series of YouTube lockdown films titled ‘Kandy Kamera.’

The personal, funny, mother and daughter episode sees Laura’s ‘on the sofa’ interview with her mum at their home near Bristol, hearing about her work as a receptionist for Volkswagen, her extensive volunteering and her daily exercise regime.

A recent Skydive in Swindon, organised by Muscular Dystrophy UK, was something she had always wanted to do – and it raised £2,500.

Shelley, 48, says:

I can’t dance on tables anymore and some days the condition makes me feel as though I am carrying a very heavy rucksack on my back, but my attitude is to always to stay positive. If you snooze, you lose.

The footage includes a clip of Shelley’s daily, exuberant sit-down Zumba sessions as well as footage of her cheekily driving her motorized scooter across the road to meet a friend for a few drinks.

Once I am in a wheelchair full time – my aim is to have 29 friends, who, with my two children, will take me out every single day of the month. I am determined that when that time comes I will say,’ Do you remember when?’ not, ‘I wish I had.

Laura, 28, is a beauty therapist and support worker for adults with learning difficulties and mental health issues. She created Kandy Kamera with best friend Frankie Gregory in pursuit of their ambition to be media professionals.

I love being in front of the camera and Frankie has a real talent for media and editing. At the beginning of lockdown we wanted to spread positivity and tell the amazing stories of the people around us who inspire. We also determined to have some fun during a tough time.

There are people who moan about life and then there are others, like my mum, who have muscular dystrophy and just go on living life to the full, no matter what is thrown in their way.

Laura loves travelling. She worked in Ibiza for two years and also worked travelled in Australia, Asia and America. She met her boyfriend at the Boomtown festival in 2017 and they are now expecting their first child as well as working towards buying their first home.I

I just spend my days being happy and having a laugh. I really try to live my life to the full. And I get this from my amazing mum.
