One man who signed up to run the Oxford Town and Gown 10k four times in succession

With several family members living with myotonic dystrophy, Adam Smith, 47, from the Cotswolds, started doing the Oxford Town and Gown 10k ten years ago. He said he needed a target to encourage him to run further and was impressed that it was organised by MDUK (back then the Muscular Dystrophy campaign.)

"Why run 10k when you can run 40k? At this year’s annual Muscular Dystrophy Town & Gown race, I am aiming to complete the course not once, not twice, and no not three times……I’m going for FOUR laps!"

Adam’s mum, brother, uncle and cousin all had the condition. Now his brother Douglas, who is in a wheelchair, is the only survivor. The first race was the first time he had raised funds for MDUK but he has not looked back. So far they have raised £25,000 for MDUK.

I’ve run London dressed as a gnome, I’ve run a double London Marathon, and I’ve made an official Guinness World Record attempt dressed as a gnome on a toadstool!  My wife has also joined in, raising funds for MDUK last year on RideLondon.

Adam’s sons (pictured) Dan (left) who is now 14 and Louis (right) 11 have also run with him and will be accompanying him for this year’s event on 3 May. He said:

"I am a bit of a solo runner. I do events with other people, but mostly train solo. My wife has also joined in, raising funds for MDUK last year at RideLondon."
