A protein similar to dystrophin. Utrophin is present in everyone - including individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy - but at very low levels. Scientists have shown that increasing the level of utrophin protein can compensate for the loss of dystrophin in a mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
