Mobility Equipment Grant Fund

If you or your child have a muscle wasting condition, you may need different equipment as your needs change over time.

The right equipment can make a big difference to you or your child’s safety, independence and quality of life. But equipment can be expensive, and not everything is provided by the NHS or your local council.

Our Mobility Equipment Grant Fund can help towards the cost of equipment such as wheelchairs, powered scooters, riser seats and small wheelchair adaptations.

Register your interest to hear when the Mobility Equipment Grant Fund opens.

Who can apply

You must:

  • Live in the UK
  • Live with a muscle wasting or neuromuscular condition. Check if your condition is eligible
  • Need access to specialist equipment for your daily mobility, to live safely and independently

Our grants are not means tested. This means your income or savings do not affect your eligibility.

Before you apply

It’s important to first check what support you are entitled to from statutory services, such as the NHS Wheelchair Services, by requesting an assessment.

If you haven’t had an assessment before, your GP or clinical team can help you access the appropriate referral.

Equipment we fund

Our tariff below includes a list of the items we can fund, and the maximum amount of funding you can be awarded.

Equipment Type  Tariff
Electric wheelchair Up to £5,000
Manual wheelchair Up to £1,750
Powered scooter Up to £1,000
Riser for an NHS funded wheelchair Up to £1,000
Power assist adaptation (for example, motorised power unit, attendant control) Up to £500
Wheelchair adaptation (for example, backrest, pressure-relieving cushion, headrest) Up to £200

The amount you can expect to be awarded will depend on available funds and demand.

If your application is successful, the grant will go towards the cost of buying the equipment and delivery, and you’ll own the equipment. You’ll be responsible for any future costs, including insurance, repairs, servicing and disposal.

Please consider these ongoing costs when choosing equipment, and before making an application. We’ll ask you to confirm you’re happy to take on this responsibility when you apply.

We can’t fund

  • Equipment already ordered or purchased
  • Equipment that does not meet an everyday mobility need
  • Second-hand equipment unless from a specialist dealer
  • Equipment not listed within our tariff. For example, tyres, batteries.
  • Ongoing costs such as insurance, repairs, servicing or disposal costs
  • Grants to people living outside of the UK
How to apply

Applications are not currently open. Register your interest and we’ll let you know when the next application round opens.

Once applications open, you’ll be able to complete an online application form which we’ll link on this page.

The questions in this form ask about the applicant and their equipment needs, assessment and equipment details, and the difference a grant may have.

The form can be completed by the applicant or by someone supporting them, such as a parent, carer or family member. If you are completing the form on behalf of the applicant, please answer questions where possible with the applicant.

The form should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You can save your application and come back to finish it later.

If you save your form, you’ll have 30 days to complete and submit your application.  Simply select ‘Save and continue’ to receive an email link and return to your application any time during that period. If you haven’t submitted it within 30 days, it will expire and you’ll have to start a new application.
