Welfare and employment

Disabled people are an important part of society. But too often, daily life doesn’t reflect this.

If you have a disability, life simply costs more. It costs disabled households £1,095 more a month to have the same living standards as non-disabled households. This is the disability price tag. Most disabled households don’t have this extra money to spend.

You can claim benefits to help. If you live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland you can claim PIP (Personal Independence Payment) to help with the extra costs. In Scotland, it’s the Adult Disability Payment. But they’re not enough.

In a time of higher living costs and job market turmoil, it’s disabled people that are hit the hardest. Governments across the UK must do more.

What’s happening now

The Timms Review is currently happening

It is looking into the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and how eligibility for the benefit is assessed. The Review will be publishing a report in Autumn 2026.

We’re expecting them to make several recommendations for reform – and will be working to make sure that these changes work for people living with a muscle wasting condition.

The UK Government will also probably make other changes to the welfare and employment system, like Access to Work

In Scotland

The Adult Disability Payment (ADP) has replaced PIP. Last year, an Independent Review into ADP recommended changes the Scottish Government could make. We’re keeping a close eye to see which changes are taken forward.

We’re already talking to key decision makers about how they can better help people living with a muscle wasting condition feel financially secure and break down barriers to employment.

What we’re calling for

  • Fix PIP so that it works for people living with a muscle wasting condition. This includes redesigning the PIP assessment, improving the PIP criteria and scrapping things like the 20-metre rule.
  • Reduce the amount of benefit reassessments faced by people living with a muscle wasting condition.
  • No more cuts to benefits such as Universal Credit.
  • Build a better system of employment support to help people with a muscle wasting condition find, and stay in, stable work.
  • Fix the unacceptable delays and other problems with the Access to Work scheme.
  • Improve employer understanding of disabled people’s needs.

What you can do to help

We must urgently demand a benefits system across the UK that recognises all our needs, and our right to live independently and with dignity.

Sign the petition. Stand with everyone that lives with a muscle wasting condition and who receives PIP or ADP.

Change is possible. And it starts with us acting today.
